Write an image file to a USB or SD card in Linux

Verify the image is correct and has not been corrupted during download or tampered with:

  1. When downloading the image, also download a copy of the SHASUMS file from the the official site.
  2. Open a terminal and CD to the directory of the image
  3. Run the sha512sum tool, for example:
    $ sha512sum Fedora-Server-xxx.iso
  4. Check the output against the SHASUMS file downloaded.

Writing the file to disk:

Debian

  • # fdisk -l
  • # umount /dev/sdX#
  • # cp debian.iso /dev/sdX && sync

Fedora

  • # dd if=fedora.iso of=/dev/sdX && sync

Linuxmint

  • # fdisk -l
  • # umount /dev/sdX#
  • # dd if=linuxmint.iso of=/dev/sdX oflag=direct bs=1048576

Ubuntu

  • # dd if=mini.iso of=/dev/sdX bs=4M && sync
